Danforth says Republicans are headed for doomsville

There's an interesting op-ed piece in today's NYT by former Missouri Senator John Danforth (who resigned as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in January). He says the Republican party, concerned more about outlawing gay marriage than fixing the deficit, has become nothing more than a politcal extension of a religious movement. "When government becomes the means of carrying out a religious program, it raises obvious questions under the First Amendment," he writes.

Related: A recent CP interview with former Minnesota Senator Dave Durenberger, who discusses, among other things, the What Would Jesus Do platform and the inherent problem with legislating faith.
