Kerry: Stumping for 2008?

This campaign stop is for the kids!

John Kerry will speak at a town hall meeting at 10:00 a.m. today in an effort to promote his Kids First Bill, which he says will provide coverage to the 11 million uninsured children in America. The meeting will take place at Lakes & Plains Regional Council of Carpenters and Joiners Hall in St. Paul. According to an e-mail newsletter from Kerry, he's "coming to Minneapolis to hear from people who are living without health care for their families every day and to talk about how we can join together to help cover Minnesota's kids."

But Washington insiders say Kerry is setting the stage for another presidential run in 2008. (His aides even hinted as much immediately after the last election.) He'll have a tough battle ahead, given that polls show Hillary Clinton is already the favored Democratic nominee, something the seemingly unflappable Kerry isn't taking too lightly. After Sen. Mark Dayton introduced Clinton as the next great president of the United States at a Minneapolis Democratic dinner last month, Kerry later approached Dayton on the Senate floor with daggers in his eyes, a story Dayton still stands by. Kerry's spokesperson, however, insists those were just friendly hockey sticks in those baby blue eyes of his.
