Supremes: Resignation day?

The current term of the Supreme Court ends today, which probably means that cancer-stricken Chief Justice William Rehnquist will announce his retirement shortly; there has been speculation that 85-year-old John Paul Stevens or 75-year-old Sandra Day O'Connor might step down as well. The NYT and WashPost have stories on the right's preparation for the pending nomination fight.

Let the handicapping of potential nominees begin: Slate,  LA Times, Dallas/Ft. Worth Star-Telegram. Here's an AP story on why Bush may wait until after Congress's August recess to make his nomination.

PS: In a 5-4 decision highlighted by Sandra Day O'Connor's swing vote, the Court today ruled against the posting of the Ten Commandments and other expressly religious displays in public buildings.
