Rajun Cajun!

For a fascinating glimpse of life on the ground in coastal Louisiana, check out the live feed from KLRZ-FM. Based out of LaRose, about 60 miles south of New Orleans, in the heart of Cajun Country, the station has been transformed into a kind of ad-hoc community bulletin board.

They're still playing some pretty good Cajun music (I particularly enjoyed "Everything on the Hog is Good," artist unknown), but most of the programming is now devoted to addressing various community concerns. This afternoon, for instance, there was a discussion dealing with how to procure food stamps and another highlighting reports of gasoline price gouging. One woman called in seeking a refrigerator; another was trying to locate a food bank in neighboring Thibodeaux.

Then there was a report of a man who--for reasons left unexplained--had misplaced his clothing. "You know the guy who lost his clothes?" one of the DJs asked. "He panicked." Apparently the man had called the local sheriff's office seeking his apparel. "Cliff, we got your clothes," the DJ reassured him. "We're saving 'em for you."

But the chief concern expressed by most folks? When they might get their electricity restored.
