Borene drops out of legislative race

Citing issues of chemical dependency, DFL State Senate candidate Andrew Borene has just circulated an email saying he will drop out of the race against Republican incumbent Geoff Michel in District 41, covering parts of Edina and other western suburbs.

"I have concluded that I am chemically dependent and will enter treatment for my alcohol dependency... Recent events have convinced me that I cannot pursue my passion for public service, make progress in recovery, and tend to the needs of my family," Borene said in a statement forwarded to City Pages and other media outlets by his field director, Genevieve M. Davila. It is enclosed in full below.

The announcement came two days after police responded to a domestic call from Borene's home that ended with the arrest of his wife, Britta Borene, on misdemeanor fifth-degree assault charges. (More details at Politics in Minnesota's new Real Time blog.) A young, charismatic Iraqi war veteran, Borene was considered a strong challenger to Michel in a district that traditionally has elected moderate Republicans.

Statement Of Andrew Borene

Edina, MN--In the next days I will formally withdraw from the Minnesota Senate race in District 41.

With the assistance of professionals, I have concluded that I am chemically dependent and will enter treatment for my alcohol dependency. That dependency has hurt those I love, including my wife and our children.

Recent events have convinced me that I cannot pursue my passion for public service, make progress in recovery and tend the needs of my family.

For my actions which I deeply regret, I apologize to my amazing wife, Britta, my family and to my friends and the citizens of District 41. While my withdrawal is necessary, I apologize also to the many good people who have stood by me, generously contributing their time and talents.

Andrew, Take of yourself and things at home, then get back into it. You are a natural, and we need more people like you to continue the fight for good government. Don't rush, you are young. I will be cheering for you. Joanne Okagaki
City Pages, I have no idea how to address Mr. Borene,so I hope you can forward this message to him in whatever way you can. Thanks!

Looks like your bullshitting finally caught up to you! I wish your family the best and you well I wish you an ounce of clearity. Maybe you'll realize you don't know much about being a COMBAT veteran and do not represent any of us!

Andrew,
You can beat chemical dependency. I have and so can you. What you have that I don't is a chance to lead the people into a great new future. If you choose to, the people will still support you. If you don't, you will lead a beautiful life none the less. Godspeed son.
