In a touching display of bipartisan unity and legislative elbow grease, senators Norm Coleman and Amy Klobuchar joined forces yesterday to help pass a resolution condemning the use of character-assailing puns in newspaper ads.
Our senators joined 70 others in voting to rebuke MoveOn.org for their placement of an anti-war ad in The New York Times questioning the factual accuracy of General David Petreaus’s past assessments of the war in Iraq.
But the main point of contention had to do with a pun present in the ad's title ("General Petraeus or General Betray Us?"), as Klobuchar explains:
"To juxtapose a military commander's given surname with a negatively connoted, rhyming phrase is downright deplorable," she said* earlier today. "As such, I can think of no better use of the Senate's time and energy than passing this much-needed piece of pseudo-legislation."
Meanwhile, a source close to the general has confirmed that his surname is indeed pronounced puh-TRAY-us.
Fortunately for fans of talk radio and Fox News, it's still reportedly fair game to accuse anti-war officials of betraying America, provided of course, the allegation doesn’t come in pun form.
Liberal wordsmiths contacted by City Pages declined comment, save for one punster who denounced the vote as "Bush league."
.
*City Pages apologizes for this wanton fabrication. Here's Klobuchar's actual quote via her press secretary Linden Zakula: "I support all the brave men and women in our military who serve our country. They deserve our respect, whether or not we agree on their mission, and as such I did not think this particular ad was appropriate."

It's a dark, embarrassing day for Congress when they have to take time out to condemn a particular example of free speech they find distasteful.
What, will they be censoring my music now and...
Oh.

The Democrats have no guts. Last year the Baker-Hamilton study group told Bush to start bringing the troops out. His two top generals, Casey and Abizaid, told him the same thing. But Bush would have nothing of that. He looked around for a "yes man",and he saw Petraeus; someone who would echo his own stubborn viewpoint. So Casey and Abizaid were canned and in went Petraeus. Did he betray us? You bet! His loyaties were to Bush, not to an honest assessment. Petraeus did his job perfectly. His report this month could have been predicted back in Jan. "There's military progress", 'More time", "Stay the course". He did exactly what Bush wanted him to. What's more, he'll say exactly the same in March when he reports again. If the Democrats had any guts (or brains) they would back up MoveOn.org one hundred percent and build on the charge from there. But they're too chicken-hearted.
Voters gave Democrats the congress in '06 so that they could stop the war, but again, no guts. All they have to do to stop the war is stop voting to fund it; they don't have to pass a bill for it, they don't need 67 votes to override a veto. Just stop funding the damn thing. If they had the guts to do that, and Bush didn't start bringing the troops out immediately, the consequences would be on his shoulders, after all, he's the commander-in-chief. But the Demnocrats are buffaloed by Bushs' mulish obstinacy, and too afraid for their political skins. So, the American people remain trapped between Bushs' insanity and no guts.

This is blatant censorship! I can see Norm voting for this, but Amy!?
I just read that since Bu$h's press conference condemning MoveOn.org, MoveOn raised $500,000 in one day for donations! A lot of the donations were from our military serving in Iraq right now! If that is not a sign that we have a rogue President and Government, what is?
Coincidentally, Norm just voted against the Leahy-Specter-Dodd Amendment to restore habeas corpus. Habeas Corpus was suspended by the unconstitutional Patriot Act "For the security of the Homeland." For those who are unaware of what Habeas Corpus is, it is the right of due process, a very basic right that is guaranteed to us in the Constitution. That means now, whomever Bu$h decides to label an enemy combatant can be arrested, locked up indefinitely, no bail, no lawyer, no trail and can be legally tortured.
These are scary times for freedom in America! We are skidding down a slippery slope to fascism. If we don't start paying attention and speaking out about these 'pesky' rights being taken away 1 by 1, we are gonna wake up (one day soon) to a police state. The amount of power being amassed by this rogue corrupt Regime in Washington should be a sign to everyone to take heed. Contact your Senators and Representatives! Tell them what you think!

And now I feel betrayed. When I voted for Amy Klobuchar, I was under the impression she was a Democrat. Turns out she's a Republican.
