St. Thomas president invites Desmond Tutu to speak

In a letter addressed earlier today to students, faculty, and staff, University of St. Thomas President Dennis Dease admitted he had “made the wrong decision” in not inviting Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

“Although well-intentioned, I did not have all of the facts and points of view, but now I do,” he wrote. “PeaceJam International may well choose to keep the alternative arrangements that it has made for its April 2008 conference, but I want the organization and Archbishop Tutu to know that we would be honored to hold the conference at St. Thomas. In any event, St. Thomas will extend an invitation to Archbishop Tutu to participate in a forum to foster constructive dialogue on the issues that have been raised.”

St. Thomas administrators received a barrage of indignant emails and phone calls after we broke the story that university of brass had opted out of hosting the Nobel Laureate amid concerns that his critical stance regarding Israeli policy might offend the local Jewish community. Julie Swiler of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas told St. Thomas officials that Tutu’s words during a 2002 speech were especially controversial and hurtful. Now she has agreed to co-sponsor the forum, should Tutu accept the offer.

Jim Winterer, a spokesman for the university, said the outcry was too ubiquitous to ignore.

“Father Dease was in touch with a lot more people this time than he was the first time around,” he says wryly. “Calls were coming in from around the world.”

Metropolitan State University, in conjunction with PeaceJam International, booked Tutu for an April appearance after St. Thomas turned him down. That arrangement still stands.

Oh, dammit. Our all-powerful "Israel lobby" has once again failed to silence dissent. Damn you, Mearsheimer and Walt! You have once again foiled the Zionist neocon dreams of world domination.

Listen, though....don't ever, EVER accuse Israel bashers who single out Israel above all countries in the world for intense, out-of-proportion criticism of being anti-Semitic. Then you're "crying anti-Semitism just because somebody DARES to criticize Israel" (as if it's so friggin' daring - go on a college campus these days and see what's more daring - vilifying Israel or praising it publicly. "Daring" describes those proud Jews willing to stand with their people, not the cowards who jump on the anti-Israel bandwagon as a means to express their Jew hatred).

Until we have a serious discussion in this country about the traditional enemies of free speech the censorship will continue. Our rights to hear diverse opinions with regards to the Israeli occuption of Palestine will continue to be trampled on by the US Jewish Lobby.

What part of Palestine do you considered to be "occupied"?
If you mean the West Bank, OK. If you mean Gaza, Israel already pulled out two years ago. No longer "occupied." If you mean all of Israel, then you don't consider Israel to have a legitimate right to exist, and thus it is YOU who has some explaining to do.

But hey, that US Jewish lobby that tramples on everything failed to keep Tutu away from St. Thomas in the end, huh? Like I said, we really need to step up our world domination efforts - we're falling down on the job!

Israel is a terrorist nation.

And the pro-Israel lobby in America tries to silence dissent.

Whoever referred to the University of Saint Thomas as a rinky-dink parochial school got it right.

For the truth about Israel, read this:

Or you can just believe the bigots who plant false smears and outright lies. Your call.

Unfortunantly this became about Isreal. It is not and was not. The next question is if the professer that arranged his invitation has been reinstated. as we know she was punished for failing to self censor correctly

This was about repression of free speech. It is not about the supposed racism of everybody except pro war isrealis

Dang, I was hoping they'd reinvite that Siren of Skank, Colter, instead because she's evidently so much more in line with the values of St Thomas.

I know spelling isn't some peoples' forte, but I have a hard time taking anybody who spells "Israel" as "Isreal" seriously....sorry. It displays a certain ignorance.

People are soooo confused! All the anti-Semites pop their ugly little heads, and talk about Israel. But it is about Dease, about the Archdiocese, about Tutu's ability to let loose plenty of criticism at the Catohlic Church (he is an Anglican archbishop), about the Catholic Church's stance on gays, on ordination, on celibacy, on social justice, on war. Remember, UST has a strong ROTC program, and Tutu, with a microphone in hand, on a stage, may well blast UST (and by extension the ones who run Dease - the Archdiocese and its hierarchy) for it.

So that is all it is about! Dease is a puppet, and not a good one at that. Now he got crucified (sorry for the pun Rev. Dease!) and the retraction makes you lok like a fool, a bumbling fool! (You did not have all the facts the first time around - by your own letter) and you admitted you did not do your homework yet again!

Onwards.

TUTU WHO????????never hear of this person

Posted by: Jennifer, New York at October 16, 2007 6:54 PM

It's amazing. Obviously most people commenting here have not read the text of Archbishop Tutu's speech of April 13, 2002. This is the speech which Julie Swiler, public affairs director for the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota deemed "hurtful to Jews". No one addresses a) what the Archbishop said in that speech, or b) if the original criticism of the Archbishop is correct. So much for informed discourse.

Then there is the matter of supposed openness to opposing views. Iranian President Ahmadinejad is allowed to address the students of Columbia University, but Archbishop Tutu is barred from St. Thomas. Even the American Jewish Committee said that while they found him a severe critic of Israeli policy, they dismissed the idea that he made anti-Semitic statements.

To both sides of the "discussion" posted here, read more, be informed, and spout less.
