The mendacity of Katherine Kersten

In today's column, the Strib's token right-wing columnist attempts to rehabilitate the tarnished image of ousted U.S. Attorney Rachel Paulose.

Anybody who has been following the story in Kersten's paper should know already why Paulose wasn't right for the job. Her management style has been described as "dictatorial and at times vindictive." She was under investigation for mishandling classified documents and referring to an employee as "fat" "black" and "lazy." She then went on the National Review Online and made wild claims about being the victim of "McCarthyite hysteria" because of her religion, conservativism, gender, and race.

Of course, none of this gets mentioned in Kersten's column. Instead, Katherine claims that Paulose was the victim of a "professional crucifixion" because she was doing such a great job of prosecuting child pornographers and sex slave traffickers.

Offering a contrarian opinion is one thing, but this is outright disinformation, and everyone at the Strib--including Kersten--knows it. Perhaps the headline writer was offering the reader a subtle warning when he labeled the column: "A rumor riot buries the truth about Rachel Paulose."
