I was reminded of this today as I flipped through the new issue of Newsweek and saw a picture of the Hensel twins in a swimming pool. They were mentioned at the tail end of an article called Reality's Believe It or Not. Here's the part of the article concerning the Hensel twins:
You hear a lot of mixed emotions from the stars of these shows—none of whom, by the way, is paid to appear. Abby and Brittany Hensel allowed the world to watch them take their driving test, even while the conjoined twins—they have two heads but one set of arms and legs—decided who would control the gas (Abby) or the blinker (Brittany). "Abby and Brittany Turn 16" is handled with great care, the girls are given plenty of time to talk about their anatomy in nonsensational ways. They explain that they made the film "so people wouldn't have to always stare and take pictures. Cause we don't like it when they take pictures … so they just know who we are and stuff." But as the film progresses, you see that any time the twins leave their Minnesota town, people blatantly photograph them, leaving the girls feeling "violated," according to their mother, Patty. She gets teary in the documentary when she explains how she doesn't want her girls to grow up like circus performers, and she hasn't let the girls speak to the media since the movie debuted two years ago. Watch the movie now—it's still in heavy rotation on the Discovery Health network—and you can see why they'd shun the spotlight. It's hard to shake the creepy, voyeuristic feeling you get when you watch the girls make pottery or brush each other's hair. The narrator explains that they are, "in nearly every sense, perfectly normal teenagers." But we know we're watching precisely because they're not.
YouTube embed of "Joined for Life: Abby and Brittany Hensel turn 16" after the jump ...
According to this Wikipedia entry, the Hensel twins first came to the world's attention in 1996. Two years later, the Carver County, Minnesota, twins were featured on the cover of Life under the caption "One Body, Two Souls."
The Hensel twins appeared in a followup documentary on the Learning Channel in December 2006, when they were 16. This was the documentary that my wife and I saw. The most amazing part of the story was when the twins passed their drivers license exam, which is described in the Wikipedia article:
They had to take the tests twice, once for each twin. Both control the steering wheel, Abby controls the pedals, transmission, radio, heat, defogger etc. , and Brittany controls the turn signal and lights.
These two young women have remarkable spirit and their story should serve as an inspiration to anyone tempted to think his or her life is too challenging.

I was touched by the attitudes and behavior of their friends and teachers. The girls are accepted as normal, which, in their minds, they are. That English teacher is a the kind of teacher all students should have.

You girls are so beautiful. I live in the Twin Cities area and I see you out and about once in a while. I'm sorry that people make you feel uncomfortable. People forget that we are all unique in our own way, some people's uniqueness is visible and some not. You are both an example to our community. I wish you all the best in your future.

My family was on the same cruise as Abby and Brittany and their mom this past spring....they are friendly and polite; typical teenage girls who like to have fun. It's obvious that they were raised to respect others....I just hope they receive the respect they deserve from people who feel "entitled" to ask questions. They seem like well-adjusted teenagers with a very loving mom. Good luck in your futures, girls!!

Congrads on getting your drivers license. Best of luck in everything you do.

Hi, Abby and Brittany. I have twin sister's who are both, 28 year's, old. They are not conjoined, but, one of them named, Caroline, just became a nurse, and, my other sister Devon, has a rare nerve disease, called, "RSDS". If you girl's go on the website: RSDHope.org it will tell you more about her, disease. Devon, has only had this disease for, 3 1/2 year's but, she hopes to feel better, soon. Anyhow, I am there older sister, and, I wish you to, the best in, college. And, have a good, rest of this, short summer, and just think, "You girl's can now vote, and, buy, lottery, tickets".

I've followed Abby and Brittany from afar for years, and have always loved their spunky personalities. I hope they let the world know what they are up to these days. Things change a lot between 16 and 18!

Abby & Brittany are truly an inspiration for all of us whiners that find things to complain about every day. You are two amazing women with character and personalities with no limitations!

Hey Abby and Brittany. First of all i want to wish both of you a happy belated birthday and i hope your sweet sixteen was everything you hoped for. After watching the video of your sixteenth birthday i came to realize how much hardship you guys must face during a day. I have an identical twin brother named Krys and we pretty much do and have done everything together since we were well as far back as i can remember at least lol. I wanted to congradulate you two for getting your drivers liscence i think that is how you spell it.. anyways my next real positive comment is too your mom, i apoligize because i did not get her name but i found what she was told by news reporters and magazine groups top be absolutely appauling. Saying that she needs to give the world an explaination to how you too came to be. I know if i swear they will probably take this comment off so i will hold my tongue on any foul language, but seriously had i have been there at that exact moment i would have punched that guy in the face, or would have told off the person to have every even thought that they deserved an explaination. i can kind of relate to you guys cept of course not being physically connected. My brother has a birthmark that covers about half of his chest from the center of his stomach to about the center of his back. I know how it must feel to be looked at with strange looks and it makes me sad that the world has become so harsh. You two are a miracle of life, never forget that. seriously next time anyone tries to get pictures of you or says anything that is mean or vulgar , than yeah get in there face about it. Everytime someone makes fun or eyeballs my brothers stomach the wrong way, i make it my business to lets just say, solve the problem. Ihope that this reaches you guys or at least that you read these posts. You two are amazing and i wish you both the best of luck

Wow! What a fine work God has made with you two. I saw you get your licenses on TLC and want to cheer you on with your challenging lives. I couldn't have imagined your situation (I still can't.) when I wrote this poem a few months ago. I was in the pediatric ward of U of I hospital with my daughter who has P.A.N.D.A.S. That's a rare disorder where the immune system attacks the brain. I was reminded of the varied challenges of the children in that ward and how God has used such things to do marvelous work. I now feel compelled to pass you "The Potter's China".
God is the Potter, we are the pots.
Fearfully and wonderfully made are we.
Yet only the Potter has His wishes with the pots.
Many are made for common purposes.
Practically suited for everyday uses.
For some less practical,
Everyday chores are awkward and difficult.
Still others can't do them at all.
For what good are they suited?
They need so much care!
We may think them more cursed
But oh don't we dare.
The lame, the blind,
The deaf, the ill and slow of mind.
All are works of the same Potter's masterful hand.
When special occasions arrive,
Everyday place settings just won't do.
We would miss them completely,
Except off of the shelf and out of the hutches
Come the most wonderful works of the Potter's craft.
It's in the special moments of life they shine.
They who won't do for everyday use,
Are the Potter's China so fine.
May you both place every day but always know you're finer than an everyday place setting.

Hi Abby and Brittney. I watched your story 2 yrs ago and then I actually saw you at Ridgedale Mall but I did not realize it was you as I did not recall you lived in MN. That is soo cool. I live near Maple Grove and work in Wayzata. You two are so beautiful and have such awesome attitudes about life! I have an identical twin too by the way. Hope you are enjoying being 18!!

Hi Abby and Britany,
I dont usually do this online thing but I felt compelled to after watching you guys on TLC get your license. Frist of all CONGRATULATIONS!!! Please be careful - there are many crazy drivers out there.
Secondly I would like you to know I really admire the way you live your lives and I say this because many of us who are not cojoined do not live as fully as you two do. John 10:10.
God created you in His image and likeness and He has made you perfect. My prayer for you is that you completely fulfill His calling on your lives as you live abundantly. I don't know what that may be, but I pray that you have listening ears for Him and open hearts to be obedient to Him as He speaks to you.
Please do not think I am presumptious... I really do not know you and do not know how your life is. I just pray for you that you will continue to live as God wants you to and not limit Him to human understanding...He is much bigger.
Where ever the future takes you, remember that God has you in the palm of His hands and He is more that able to see you through.
Also your mum is great!
God bless you and your family all the days of your lives.

Congrats on the Licence!! Hope you all are doing well. It is so funny how half the world feels like they know you because of your documentaries. For me, personally, it really does feel like I know you, better than people I see on a regular basis. Even though you would'nt know the difference between me and Paris Hilton I know so much about the two of you it feels like family. I hope that isn't annoying. I suppose it gets old having strangers treat you like they have known you forever.
I'm sure you get all kinds of people invading your privacy along with the paparazi. I promise I will do my best not to annoy you if we ever do meet. However, I have a super fine 17yo son who is single and starting college and opening his own business soon. You never know?? Maybe I could end up really in the family. I think I would make a great mother-in-law to any young woman. My oldest daughter is getting married next summer, and so far the son-in-law to be is being quite the gentleman. Well enough about me.
I pray you girls keep up with what you are doing because from where I'm standing you each are amazing and would make any mother proud.
All my love,
Maggie

Hi Abby and Brit ~
How are you 2? I saw your grad pix in the insert in the LOCAL paper (your moms maiden name is big in my town) and the pix turned out very nice ~ How did graduation go? How did your parents get through it? My son graduated this past May as well, it was hard to see my oldest child go through that process, only because it is such a HUGE step for a parent, sometimes I think more-so than for the student themself.
Anyway, if you 2 made it to the college it stated in the insert, best of luck to you both ~~

You girls are amazing! I wish you both the absolute best! You are really lucky in many ways compared to "normal" people too. I am not sure if you realize how loney it is living alone in one body. That's how it is for everyone "normal". I quote "normal" because it is of course relative. Your situation is "normal" for you, but for those living alone in one body, this is normal and your situation is not. Anyway, be glad that you will never feel the terrible empty feeling of aloneness. You will always have each other, you'll never be alone! That's a great gift.
