Kevin Hoffman claimed three writing awards, two for sports writing. In Sports Spot News, his piece "The Strongest Men in the World" was selected, and in Sports Features, "The Boogeyman Drops the Gloves" also was honored. In the Photojournalism contest, Nick Vlcek's photographs of Derek Boogaard for "Boogeyman" were also selected for praise.

Hoffman's other writing honor came for "Boy Interrupted," his story about an anorexic man. This claimed an award in the Long Feature category. In the Best Use of Multimedia category, Jeff Shaw's online package for "Boy, Interrupted" also garnered honors. The package includes a photo slideshow, audio slideshow, video and expanded content blog post with audio files and resources for people with eating disorders.

"Mall of Amerisize Me," Matt Snyders' week-long foray into the MOA, is a winner in the Business Feature section. The MoA story was also recently chosen for inclusion in the third volume of Convergences, a book used in journalism schools.

Former staffers also brought in accolades. In the Editorial and Opinion: Arts & Entertainment section, "LA Plays Itself" by Rob Nelson was a winner. For In-Depth Business, G.R. Anderson, Jr. & Paul Demko's prescient "Trials and Stribulations" earned an award. Demko's Business Spot News piece "Newspaper War" about Par Ridder was another story so honored.

City Pages received 11 total awards from the SPJ this year. In 2005, CP won six SPJ awards, and in 2006 the paper won eight.
