VP Pawlenty Meter: insiders picking Romney as Gov. criticizes McCain's bridge blame

t-paw.jpg
Will Governor Tim Pawlenty become our nation's next vice president? It's hard to keep track of all the many factors at play. Each week, the VP Pawlenty Meter (TM) provides an odds sheet to ensure you make your best bet.

Last week, we took the unprecedented step of raising the VP Pawlenty Meter to Orange Alert. T-Paw was listed by several pundits among the top tier, with 5-to-1 odds, and had none of the baggage of the other frontrunners.

But like a confident young hare, Pawlenty may have fallen asleep on the side of the road and allowed a turtle to sneak up on his rear. In this case, that turtle is Mitt Romney.

Yesterday brought word that insiders are now picking Mittens as the frontrunner in the veepstakes:

The latest Evans-Novak Political Report says that "a rumor running through the political community" now puts former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) in the lead to be Sen. John McCain's vice presidential candidate. "But Romney has many critics in the McCain inner circle, and we don't think the decision has been made."

There is also speculation McCain could name his veep early "to step up fund-raising before the national convention."

Meanwhile, today T-Paw is biting the hand that feeds, gently sidestepping John McCain's recent claim that the 35W bridge collapse could be blamed on pork barrel spending:

In Pennsylvania on Wednesday, McCain told reporters: "The bridge in Minneapolis didn't collapse because there wasn't enough money. The bridge in Minneapolis collapsed because so much money was spent on wasteful, unnecessary pork-barrel projects."

Asked if McCain's comments were appropriate or should be corrected, Pawlenty said, "I don't know what he's basing that on other than the general premise that projects got misprioritized throughout time."

He said he called the McCain campaign to remind them of the upcoming NTSB report.

But Pawlenty struck a much different tone than he took when reacting to political foes who previously questioned the role of deferred maintenance in the collapse that killed 13 people and injured 145. After the NTSB issued its preliminary findings in January, Pawlenty admonished critics to "quit using the bridge, quit exploiting the bridge tragedy to advance their political agenda."

After a brief and unprecedented raise to Orange Alert, we're dialing down the VP Pawlenty Meter to Yellow this week:

Palin or Romney (one of those 2 will be selected McCain's VEEP) Each has the greatest assets, for different reasons, compared to any minuses.

We want Mitt Romney!!!!!! Have total faith and confidence in all that he is doing and has accomplished in his life. We pledged Mitt's campaign, and if Mitt's on the ticket the money will flow., that's a given!!!!

How could the republicans not pick Mitt Romney as the VP? Who would be better for the economy? He would be awesome for fund raising. Romney compliments McCain’s greatest weakness and the nations most important issue currently, the economy.

Mitt is the man. I will donate, volunteer, etc., if he is the VP. There are a few others for whom I have similar feelings, such as Rick Santorum, Tom Tancredo, etc. But, if McCain doesn't pick a person who believes in limited government, I am not sure what I will do. Concerning Pawlenty, it feels like he has drunk the coolaid on global warming--which makes me loose respect for him.

You people are not well. We're easily the nation populated by the largest majority of stupid dumb ass motherfuckers that ever dragged their knuckles across the face of the earth if we put another Republican in the White House. Just how bad does it have to get to wake you all the fuck up anyway?

Fucking Republicans and their STUPID powder blue ties.

It looks like there are people on this site who think they are awake but really are not and the only thing they can do to make everyone else go to sleep is whine and complain.

My family knowing Mitt Romney for the last 40+ years has great confidence in his abilities and are absolutely confident that he would make a great VP.

How are either Romney or Pawlenty going to be able to defend McCain's amnesty/legalization move for 12 to 20 million illegals and his sucking up to LaRaza?

Are they willing to sell themselves for McCain/Kennedy. Come to think about it, that should be the ticket-McCain/Kennedy

Some of you think it's 'cute' to post foul language on public boards. Ok, fine with me. Your lack of intelligence shows in your chosen words.

There is no other candidate, on either side, that ran this time around that possesses the level of understanding of the economy that Mitt Romney possesses. None of them can even come close.
While the Mccains, Clintons, and Obamas of the world have been sittiing in DC Mitt has been out in the real world getting the job done with countless businesses.

If Mccain picks Romeny Mitt will run the economy while he runs the war.

If we elect Barry Obama we get to pay taxes to subsidize the healthcare for millions of illegals.

Mitt will draw more votes than any other VP choice. Gotta go with the sure thing.

Much ado about nothing has been made about the fact McCain and Romney don't like each other. This is a non-issue. McCain needs to keep his word and do what is best for the country. That means selecting Mitt Romney. Romney will not only bring extensive financial acumen, but also a dignity to the office. After all the crap that has been written about George W. Bush, I can say at least our country has been kept safe and I never worried about him disgracing the office and embarrassing the country with personal scandal after personal scandal. Say what you want, President Bush has served honorably and while I disagree with him on some things I understand the reasons he has done what he has done. Thank you, President Bush for your service. The time has come to let Mitt preside over the senate and then take over the reins to this country in 2012-2020. We cannot afford B. Hussein Obama or Billary. The moral fiber of our country is already weakening thanks to Hollywood and the previous administration. It is time for America to stop apologizing to everyone for our greatness and start taking care of our business again. That means right now a McCain/Romney ticket and then a Romney and whomever he selects ticket in 2012. Do the right thing, John McCain.
