A Hundred Year Old Blunder Makes "Nowthen" Official Town Name

On Monday it became official. People from Burnsville Township, some 32 miles northwest of the Twin Cities, are now residents of Nowthen, a town named after a punctuation mistake.

Back in the 1980s, a community leader listed possible names for a new post office and wrote "Nowthen, one of these ought to do." From then on people started calling the post office Nowthen.

The town that's already on Map Quest was incorporated Monday night after voters elected a mayor and four-member City Council.

Their first meeting will be July 8 and the new city plans an incorporation celebration in September.
