Bachmann: Drilling in ANWR would lead to $2-per-gallon gas

Michele Bachmann is the gift that keeps on giving, isn't she? Take her latest op-ed for the National Review, where the representative argues in favor of oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

This is the rationale:

The fact of the matter is that Congress is standing in the way of $2-a-gallon gas. It is Speaker Pelosi and the House Democrats who are refusing to let commonsense energy legislation come to the floor.

No one -- no one -- believes this. Not a single person in the United States of God Blessed America believes this. Daniel Yergin doesn't believe it. Amory Lovins doesn't believe it. The Captain doesn't believe it and neither does Tennille. No one seriously believes opening up the refuge would bring gas prices to heel.

Obviously, Bachmann is an exception to the assertions in that last paragraph, but she might be the only one. A Department of Energy study completed this May found that drilling in ANWR would lower gas prices by a whopping two cents a gallon -- and that figure wouldn't occur until 2025, because setting up oil rigs and extracting the black gold takes time.

You can make an argument for more drilling in places like ANWR. This is not an argument I'd agree with, being fond of energy policies that work, but I can see why a few drops more petroleum might look appealing right now.

$2 a gallon, though? At least we know how much gas costs in Fantasyland.

NANANANANNANANA

STILLWATER!

Which never dawned to me might be Conservative. Maybe crazy, but not conservative. Perhaps I need to travel amongst the cornfields more often (in my Hummer).

The thing you have to understand is God speaks to her. That's why she is such a maverick. She's a sexy lady and she knows how to work it! Keep up the great Bachmann articles. They bring nothing but a smile to my face and a (blank) to my pants.

Not so fast, Lake Elmoan. Don't Blame Bachmann's election on Stillwater. She LOST Stillwater in 2006. She LOST her own precinct in 2006. She barely won Washington County with less than 100 votes. Those people she represented as a state senator knew her best--and rejected her for Congress.

As for Lake Elmo--Bachmann beat Wetterling in Lake Elmo, 1913 to 1723. So I guess we can blame Lake Elmo.

Speaking of Lake Elmo, the owner of the Lake Elmo Inn is one of Bachmann's big financial supporters.

What Bachmann has done is called pandering -- doing anything she can to get votes. No matter that her facts don't make sense and are totally false. Most of the public is looking for a quick fix to our gasoline crisis and want to believe what she is saying.

Unless enough people get the word out that more drilling for oil is not the solution to our gas crisis or our climate crisis, people like her will have a shot at getting elected.

Take responsibility and work hard to see that she doesn't make it to Washington again.

The $2/gallon refers to enacting the ENTIRE energy plan; ANWR is just a small piece of it. Those slinging the arrows of stupidity are piercing themselves in the rear.

Posted by: Thomas at July 23, 2008 8:55 PM

@Thomas What exactly is this energy plan that she is touting? She doesn't seem to have voted for any energy legislation lately.

John McCain to support drilling in ANWR, biggest news from Palin/Gipson interview.
