VP Pawlenty Watch (Final edition): It's NOT Pawlenty!

Wow. So much for conventional wisdom.

DENVER - John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

Instant reaction: This is a naked grab for disenfranchised Hillary voters. One drawback: Choosing a governor with two years in office certainly detracts from McCain's "Obama's not experienced enough" argument.

The Meter has been lowered to green, and retired ... at least for four years.

Am I the only one who thinks that Sarah Palin is Alaska's answer to Michelle Bachmann? I just hope Palin is as crazy as Bachmann; just for the entertainment value!!

Palin's two years of executive experience matches Obama's two years of legislative experience in the US Senate. Of course, when you match the top of the two tickets, the McCain's experience far exceeds Obama's. People still vote for the top of the ticket.

Wow what a move! John McCain did what the Democratic party didn't have the guts to do. McCain and Republicans put a woman on the ticket. Which party really is the forward thinking one. You know it and now so does the rest of the country.

sigh. Palin was elected to be the chief executive of a state with a multi billion dolar budget. And she has served in that job for 800 or so days. BHO is a junior senator who has been 'in-session' for 140 days over two years.

Hey! Who beat me to the punch with the Michelle Bachmann comparison. She's a dead-ringer for that fascist. Oh, the hyperbole. Sorry.

PS If we are going on experience, then the direction that McCain's Washington wants us to take is just plain scary.

PSS I think this is longest comment I've ever posted.

I am waiting for all the writers and news anchors to be on the same page. You can tell they had no prepared response for this development. Everyone is coming up with contradicting messages as to why we should not vote for Republicans. Will it be experience, corruption, abortion, race. I bet they will have to resort to SNL making her look like an idiot. Its funny how when that show was good, there was no boundaries. Now, I almost think that they are required to do skits to make Republicans look bad. Come on! Not one skit that made Al Gore look bad? They could have a hay day with oboma.

Yeah John, that journalism degree from the U. of Idaho matches a law degree from Harvard, first african-american editor of the Harvard Law Review, and magna cum laude graduate too.

So why is being Governor of Arkansas and Georgia sufficient training to be President (not to mention VP) while the Governor of Alaska is not?

I believe that BHOs pre-Senate 'experience' included being a door to door canvasser in Chicago working for The Man.

It doesn't matter the gender of the person on the ticket. Palin may be female, but her politics are virilently anti-woman. Her being in power does not shatter any glass ceiling. It merely co-opts it, supports it, re-enforces it. The glass ceiling isn't just about multiple genders getting jobs at the top, but having policy that supports all the different kinds of people who try--and I doubt she is someone who will be active in creating policy that will deconstruct racism, sexism, homophobia. And her policies are freaking terrifying. For example: she thinks we should teach creationism in schools!! She is not convinced global warming is influenced by human actitivity--and is against polar bears being listed on the ESA! She is anti-abortin and wants to overturn Roe VS Wade(!!!). Yeah, shes a hockey mom, yeah she is pretty, but COME ON! I am glad McCain chose her. It makes his ticket laughable, and him less electable. Not that he needs any more help becoming less electable.

yes you're right, the republicans were the first to put a woman on the ticket. well, the first since 1984 anyway.

Posted by: cet at August 30, 2008 11:17 PM

although Palin may be lacking in international (hell maybe national too) experience but she sure can make up for it with her obvious sincerity and belief that changes can be made. While I never quite trust someone like Obama who believes he can change the world,, I feel an immediate connection to Palin. Maybe it is because I am a woman, grew up in Alaska, and age 38, but I am excited about the election again. Will they win, probably not after bush screwed so much up, but I am anticipating lots of political fun and games. I was planning on voting McCain anyway, but this sure spices things up.

Way to go with the angry post-feminist rhetoric Anna. Your equally angry co-sisters in the Cause will be proud of you.

Posted by: johnnie at August 31, 2008 6:47 PM

Jennifer, you're going to vote for her because she's a woman, your age, and from your home state? Don't be such an IDIOT.
