10/13 Morning Must Reads

Monday's five most fascinating stories printed on wood pulp:

Backyard fire pits piss off uninvited neighbors
City folks always need a reason to hate their neighbors and waste all of their free time complaining. And now there's a new fight: burners vs. nonburners. Give me a break. Nonburners say the smoke wafts into their homes, where they are forced to taste the smoke and it stinks up their living areas. Now their health is being compromised. This is a City Council whine meeting we won't want to attend.

Who is Norm Coleman anyway?
Good question. The Star Tribune is trying to answer it in a very non-bias and balanced sort of way. Today's story addresses his record and yesterday's explained what it's like to be Coleman contemplating his hard days as a Democrat turned Republican. Drink the Coleman Kool-Aid.

Bridge collapse survivor gets a $60,000 wedding
The Pioneer Press gave most of their front page to the story of Mercedes Gorden, who was injured in the Interstate 35W bridge collapse. "A year of surgeries and therapy to help repair her injured legs, she is ready to walk down the aisle Saturday with her fiance, Jake Rudh, and enjoy a lavish wedding, thanks to the generous help of more than a dozen wedding vendors from around the Twin Cities." Wedding vendors have donated $60,000 to put on the wedding.

High school student mistakenly killed, family says
Police are investigating Saturday's shooting death of an 18-year-old man in the alley behind his South Minneapolis home just a block from his high school. Friends and family said Jesse Mickelson, a senior at Roosevelt High School, was an innocent victim of a shooting intended for gang members who live on the block. Family members said he was chasing a football in the alley when a car approached and shot him to death around 7 p.m.

McCain rally shames whole state
In case you missed it... John McCain's Lakeville rally Friday turned into an event to stop potential Barack Obama assassinators. McCain was forced to praise his opponent as uneducated voters made ridiculous claims that Obama is an Arab and then booed when McCain tried to insert something positive about him. Looks like that event bombed. The Pioneer Press addresses the issue of race in Minnesota politics.
