More bad news: Allina plans to cut up to 350 jobs

Categories: Business

We hate to bog down your TGIF work parties with bad news, but just think about the people losing their jobs, OK?

About 250 to 350 jobs are being eliminated at Allina Hospitals & Clinics, according to the Star Tribune.

Allina employees 23,000 people in Minnesota and the cuts will reduce their workforce by up to 1.5 percent.

Like most businesses faced with layoffs, Allina officials said they hope to eliminate some jobs that are currently open or close positions after retirements.

According to the Star Tribune report:

Kanihan blamed the cutbacks on a combination of financial difficulties, including rising bad debt and expected cutbacks in state reimbursement rates.

"The bottom line is we're in a challenging financial environment," he said. "Turmoil in the financial markets doesn't help. Our investment portfolio is not doing as well as we had anticipated, just like everybody else's."

In January 2007, Allina cut 350 jobs, mostly at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.

We swear we are looking for businesses add hundreds of jobs, but we can't seem to find them. No news is good news lately. We are starting to wonder if anyone in this state will have a job by this time next year.
