Like Gannett newspapers across the country, the St. Cloud Times has announced massive layoffs today, laying off 10 percent of its workforce.

Britt Johnsen has the unfortunate duty of announcing her colleague's impending unemployment:

Times Media cut 23 of 217 jobs this week as it struggles with the local recession, Publisher Bill Albrecht announced Wednesday.

Of those, 17 people were let go Tuesday and Wednesday. Six open positions have been eliminated; four people volunteered to be placed on the job-cut list.

Albrecht would not detail the positions cut or from which departments. He said jobs were dropped across divisions, including sales, newsroom, production and circulation.

The company cut staff throughout its publications. Times Media publishes the St. Cloud Times, Shopping News, Wright Way Shopper and sctimes.com, along with other print and online products.
