DCCC: Bachmann fails at simple math

Rep. Michele Bachmann's unfortunate statement about the country's horrifying disappearance of rich people has gone so viral that just about every hater in the country wants to take a shot at her while she is down. So who better to rip on Bachmann than the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Because, you know, they are so nonpartisan and their opinion is quite valuable to the discussion.

Their conclusion? Bachmann is too dumb to understand simple math. Or is she?

From the DCCC:
As families across the country are struggling to make ends meet and businesses large and small are closing their doors, it has been determined that Congresswoman Michele Bachmann's refusal to support the American Economic Recovery Package may be because she simply didn't understand the simple math behind this necessary and responsible legislation. On KTLK's Chris Baker Show, Michele Bachmann claimed "The amount of money that's been committed by this Democrat government already, the amount of money that they have committed, your tax money to spend, would equal, and I'm not making this up, a check in the amount of $1,430 written to every man, woman, child in the world."

"If Congresswoman Bachmann is not 'making this up,' then her calculator must be broken," said Gabby Adler, the Midwestern Regional Press Secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Maybe Bachmann's number isn't totally off and she should have been a little more clear. She's used this number before, but it refers to all stimulus/bailout packages in the last year.

She cited this Bloomberg report in a blog post earlier this month:
"The $9.7 trillion in pledges would be enough to send a $1,430 check to every man, woman and child alive in the world. It's 13 times what the U.S. has spent so far on wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to Congressional Budget Office data, and is almost enough to pay off every home mortgage loan in the U.S., calculated at $10.5 trillion by the Federal Reserve."
Maybe we are giving her too much slack, but perhaps she was referring to the last two years of Congress when she says "by this Democrat government". Or she could just be totally insane and twisting numbers to meet whatever end she hopes to reach.

We're over it.
