Minnesota consuming less porn than other states? Doubt it.

There's an interesting new study out that analyzes the consumption of porn by state. Pharyngula points us to the study by Benjamin Edelman for the Harvard Business School where he used credit card receipts (with Zip codes) from a major online adult entertainment provider to see which states are buying the most porn.

According to one of his calculations, Minnesota ranks in the bottom 10 for subscriptions to porn per 1,000 internet users. We'd like to think we were slightly misled. According to the study, Minnesota has 1.18 porn subscriptions for every 1,000 Internet users in the state. It's not much of a difference compared to top-subscriber Utah with 2.49 subscriptions per 1,000 internet users. Well, no matter how you slice it, Utah is always on top. Heh.

The study compares Red states to Blue states and finds that states that consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious. Ha! How's that for morals?

Even funnier: Eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in the 2008 election. Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. Six out of the lowest 10 voted for Barack Obama.

Now we can't imagine this actually can explain how much porn these states actually consume. Can you seriously believe that Obama supporters watch less porn? Highly doubtful.

We've come to our own conclusion: Red states are dumb enough to actually purchase porn online while the Blue states are smart enough to just steal the plethora of free material at their disposal.
