Will South High's Tayler Hill actually break a record tonight?

Categories: Sports
Minneapolis South High's Tayler Hill was prepping for a big celebration tonight during the team's basketball game against Roosevelt. She thought she was just 25 points away from becoming the state's all-time leading scorer (boy or girl). Katie Ohm of Elgin-Millville has held the record since 2005 with 3,694 points.

But some historians are telling South to hold the celebrations for later this month. They say the school's calculations are all wrong. So who's right?

More from the Pioneer Press:
South officials say Hill, who has started for the Tigers since eighth grade, has 3,670 career points.

Not so fast, says Kevin Anderson, a regional girls basketball expert who runs a Web site devoted to girls basketball and college scouting. He has a game-by-game account of Hill's career, and his stats add up to 3,566 points. He's not alone. Contacted Monday, Matt Pederson of Starbuck, a Minnesota boys and girls basketball historian, also has Hill with 3,566 points.
When questioned, South activities director Mark Sanders tried to confirm the stats, but couldn't find scorebooks from Hill's eighth-grade and sophomore seasons. Whoops. At her scoring average of 31.7 points per game, Anderson estimates Hill can break the record on Feb. 28 at the Twin Cities Game, likely against St. Paul Central.

Her father, Paul Hill, says the family is trusting the school and plans to celebrate tonight if she breaks that record.

Who would've thought a school couldn't count or keep records?
