Minn. legislators propose constitutional ban on gay marriage

Rep. Dan Severson (R-Sauk Rapids) introduced a bill this week to amend the Minnesota constitution so that marriage between a man and a woman is the only legally recognized domestic union in the state.
The bill is co-authored by Rep. Mary Ellen Otremba (DFL-Long Prairie), Rep. Lyle Koenen (DFL-Clara City), Rep. Dave Olin (DFL-Thief River Falls), Rep. Mary Kiffmeyer (R-Big Lake), Rep. Rob Eastlund (R-Isanti).
Thirty-seven states have passed bans on same sex marriage, according to The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.
Earlier this year, Sen. John Marty (DFL-Roseville), introduced a bill providing for gender-neutral marriage laws.
"In a time of economic uncertainty, we need to be creating policies that help all families," said Monica Meyer, public policy director of OutFront Minnesota. She said she found it sad that public officials were taking steps to prohibit some of their constituents from marrying.
