Bachmann: 'Interesting coincidence' that Dems in power during swine flu outbreak
Here's the quote (at 12 min in): "I find it interesting that it was back in the 1970s that the swine flu broke out then under another Democrat president Jimmy Carter. And I'm not blaming this on President Obama, I just think it's an interesting coincidence."
Then why did you bring it up? A quick look at the swine flu scare in the 1970s brings up some interesting facts Bachmann seems to have missed that discredits even this "interesting coincidence". The first cases that spurred the swine flu vaccinations actually happened in 1976 under Republican President Gerald Ford when some Fort Dix soldiers became ill. Carter continued the vaccinations when he took office.
Check out the video of Bachmann's interview here for other money quotes including her repetition of the false "CO2 makes up 3 percent of the atmosphere" fact and her comparison of cap and trade to an Al Capone mobster scheme. Bachmann could probably write one hell of an updated "1984" novel based on all of her predictions.
Feel free to fact check the rest of the video and let us know what you pull out.

In late March 1976, President Gerald Ford emerged from a meeting with 27 health advisers with an ambitious request: "I am asking every man, woman and child in the country to get an inoculation this fall."
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 11:06AMAll this crazy lady does is use fear to further her goals. This is the exact kind of Republican we the people and the GOP do not need in office. It's one thing to disagree, but she uses hate and fear. Almost everything out of her mouth is an embarassment to herself and her state. Does she even think or fact check anything before she speaks? Or is she just too dense to realize she is exactly who the dems want to represent the GOP? She makes Palin look like a Nobel Prize winner.
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 11:38AMShe compares the President of the Palestinian Authority - Mahmoud Abbas - to one of the many "dictators" to whom Obama has extended an open hand, and who have spit on us in return. Her brief comments are rife with ignorance about the political institutions in Palestine and Abbas's perspective on Israel. More importantly, perhaps, is her dangerously misguided insinuation that the President of the PA is a dictator with whom we should not meet. She must not know or care that the U.S. has treated Abbas as a valuable ally in the region, particularly given the increased strength of Hamas, since he was elected to his current office. President Bush met with Abbas at the White House, just as President Obama will.
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 2:32PMIn an ever changing world, it's nice to know that some things stay the same . . . we can always can on Bachman for a daily dose of crazy.
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 3:05PMI thought it was an interesting coincidence that 9/11 happened when we had a Republican President.
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 4:01PMIs the hospital aware she's missing? Honestly how can someone who is clearly so far off their meds actually get elected to anything? Are they sure they counted the votes correctly? Seriously though, every time that woman opens her mouth to speak sane people sit there with a strange look making that "HUH?" sound.
Oh yeah? Well, what about the 20 million people who died from swine flu when DemocRAT Woodrow Wilson was president? What's your answer to that, Mister History Professor?
[/snark]

Actually, the 1918 flu epidemic was Influenzavirus A, subtype H1N1. The origin was never identified. Since influenza viruses mutate and can be a mosaic of several subtypes, i.e, avian, swine, human, etc., saying that 20 million people died from "swine flu" when Woodrow Wilson was president would be only a partial truth. There were no antibiotics readily available at that time, nor any Tamiflu, which is effective in treating this particular strain.
Not sure why this human tragedy is being made political, though. Some folks just never give it up.
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 4:59PMWhat's even scarier is that she handily won in November. Representative democracy is, well, representative.
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 5:03PMMan, that woman is frightfully uninformed. How the heck has she been elected twice?
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 5:04PMBachmannism at its best.
Spewing baseless, anti-American, far-right Hannitonian wing-nuttery for the sake of hogging airtime on cable news and talk radio to further her 2012 senatorial ambitions. Gotta love her!
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 5:05PMinteresting side note...republicans recently slashed $870 million in pandemic preparedness health care funding from the stimulus bill....doh!
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 5:25PMShe knows exactly what she's doing. Say any crazy, stupid, ignorant thing as long as it scares people and she'll get the right-wing nut jobs to line up behind her.
Bachman/Palin in 2012. I can't wait.
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 5:36PMI'm sure that the voters in her district are just as stupid and crazy as she is. I'm so happy I don't live in Minnesota.
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 5:42PMTo Tom Hilton,
Have you read the book, "The Great Influenza"? You may want to pick it up, it's a very interesting read. The interesting thing about the early 1900s, was they were not as clinically advanced as we are today- regarding disease control. The spread of the flu was out of control due to the fact that there was no real knowledge to keep the virus contained. Keep in mind a war was going on, disease control was not anyone's #1 priority at that time- the war was.
Things happen, regardless of who is in power- the important thing is doing what is in one's power (as a citizen too) to do what is good for the people and the world.
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 5:44PMBachmann was elected because the 6th district is totally gerrymandered, check out the map http://is.gd/vdzv --notice the snaky line all the way around the north metro. Her election was not a democratic process--the area has leaned Republican for many years.
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 5:48PMHaving spent a few of my formative years living in this woman's district, I have a few things I'd like to share with everyone who keeps asking 'How did she get elected twice?'
A surprising large amount of people in this area of the state loves two things:
God and guns.
Keep it up Emily!
In case it wasn't clear, my comment was intended as mockery of the Bachmann mentality.
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 5:59PMHey Tom Hilton--
I'm sure at least some of us got it.
Erica, I love God and Guns. I hope that doesn't mean I must believe all that smelly stuff, Michele Bachmann is saying. What she says is unimportant.
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 6:52PMSome stupidity quotes MichelleDearest embodies:
“Just think how stupid the average person is, and then realize half of them are even stupider!”
-George Carlin
“The wise understand by themselves; fools follow the reports of others”
-Proverb
I swear she reminds me of my ex. Easy on the eyes, but not drop-dead gorgeous. And if you could put up with the whacked out stuff that would FLYYYY out of her mouth, hey, you got yourself a keeper.
Then, just like the ex, the whacked out stuff wasn't funny anymore. It became annoying... then embarrasing... then enough to make you angry. Then BANG! Before you knew it, your popularity rating would take a sharp dip when you walked into any room that she was in and stand next to her.
Michelle, read a book or something! If your inanity and stupidity is some kind of cry for help, you must remember to help US help you! Give yourself a fighting chance before you become that senile woman in the retirement home, bugging the hell outta everybody.
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 8:22PMWhat an embarrassment to the state of MN she is. She sure never lets the facts get in the way of a good story does she?!
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 10:24PMWhy do the people of her district tolerate her? They should start pushing for an special election and can this &^*%$. She is a complete disgrace. For any elected official from any party to say things she has said shows that she is totally unqualified to hold such a position. If she had any respect for her district, she wouldn't say crap like this. But she doesn't. She no longer represents the interests of her district. She reps for her own interests and those of her chosen masters.
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 11:03PMIs she really an attorney???? Did she pass the Bar???? I think the Minnesota media should do a penetrating expose to determine if she reeaaaly has a law degree or license to practice law or did she just print it up on her computer.
Posted On: Wednesday, Apr. 29 2009 @ 3:15AMMy view of her district is that the people there didn't have any opinion on anything much until Lush Limbaugh showed up on the airwaves.
I lived there for 30 years and they elected Rod Grams, thats when teh crazie hit. Before that, it was Gene McCarthy.
"Another fact check fail by Bachmann."
"CO2 makes up 3 percent of the atmosphere"
Why are any of you still amazed at the modern Republican Party's disregard for the truth, for facts? Truth and facts are antithetical to their worldview. This is why they abhor education, why they belittle "liberal elites" (which is just their way of saying "People with a college education"). The facts get in the way of their agenda, reality has a liberal bias, etc, etc. So long as (they think that) their followers are too lazy to educate themselves and too stupid to think for themselves, this will be their strategy.
Posted On: Wednesday, Apr. 29 2009 @ 8:14AMI LOVE this lady! Without her bizarre rants, political life would be pretty boring. Can't wait to hear her next comment...plot...theory...whatever. Hopefully, she can soon have a regular spot on one of the news shows to spout her "stuff".
Though she has become more recently noted for her strange and wierd comments, my fondest memory of her is a visual one: peeking out behind the bushes (maybe with a camera) at a gay pride gathering.
Come on Michelle...what's next?
Posted On: Wednesday, Apr. 29 2009 @ 9:16AMIs she really an attorney???? Did she pass the Bar???? I think the Minnesota media should do a penetrating expose to determine if she reeaaaly has a law degree or license to practice law or did she just print it up on her computer.
Yes, Bachmann has a law degree--from Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma, if that counts. However, she has not been authorized to practice law in several years, and likely hasn't been in a courtroom for at least 15 years:
http://www.courts.state.mn.us/lprb/lawyersearchdetails.aspx?mars=0179863
That hasn't stopped her from continuing to describe herself as a "tax litigation attorny" to this day. She was actually a tax collections lawyer for the IRS and threw poor people into court for not paying taxes.
Posted On: Wednesday, Apr. 29 2009 @ 10:15AMAren't you people ASHAMED to have this crazy woman as your representative? I mean she has to be biggest joke, craziest person, and the worst hairdo since Tom Delay.
Posted On: Wednesday, Apr. 29 2009 @ 10:32AMShe forgot the "energy" it takes to run her stupid mouth. It's really too bad the government doesn't execute it's broad, sweeping powers over that nonsense.
Posted On: Wednesday, Apr. 29 2009 @ 11:35AMJoke of the day:
How do you know when Ms. Bachmann is saying something stupid?
Her mouth is moving.
I never thought I would see someone who made Palin look smart.
Posted On: Wednesday, Apr. 29 2009 @ 2:16PMYou think this remark is bad.. wait until this latest gaff gets published.. !!
What the hell is going on in Minnesota? You havent legalized pot, have you?
Seriously folks, do you realize what an embarrassment this woman is to your state? I thought Rhode Island was bad but she tops anything we have ever had here!!
Posted On: Wednesday, Apr. 29 2009 @ 2:29PMPoon,
Not really, considering that I don't live in her district. I'm sure as hell not going to move out of Minneapolis and into the cesspool of the 6th district just to vote against her.
Posted On: Wednesday, Apr. 29 2009 @ 4:23PMSome years ago I was young and thought it was cool that Minnesotans would vote for an ex-wrestler to be their Governor; and watching the Coleman/Franken fiasco has been "interesting"; but, the fact that Michelle Bachmann was recently re-elected has caused me to begin to question the sanity of Minnesotans. Many of us thought Sarah Palin was slow--putting it nicely. But, is Ms. Bachmann certifiably insane? What kind of District does she represent? What sort of people vote for her?
Posted On: Wednesday, Apr. 29 2009 @ 9:24PMAmazing that on a day when yet another polar study (Catlin Arctic Ice Survey from Germany) shows the polar cap is twice as thick as expected and astronomers report that solar activity is at a 100 year low all you all can continue is the global warming mantra. I thought you all are "open minded" and claim not to judge others?
Michelle Bachmann, Miss California or whoever doesn't agree with you is a closed minded non-thinker. Hypocrites.
Someone needs to test the drinking water in MN!
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 30 2009 @ 12:45AMThat nasally voice of hers makes me feel like heaving. Takes me back to a 'coincidental' bout of flu in 1991... while Bachmann was still a lawyer. Hmm, connection?
See, that makes as much sense as what she says on any given day.
The more she talks, the more I feel like moving to Iowa.
Lol, I see someone picked up on the "Hoot Smalley" Act. She is insane. I thought back about why that district of hers went to hell, it wasn't just Flush, it was that damned 700 club with Diamond Pat Robertson on the boob tube, it seemed like everyone had it on in the background in the '80s.
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 30 2009 @ 4:03AMI keep wishing I could do something meaningful for Michelle Bachmann! Over recent months I've had this persistent (please call it humanitarian) urge to start an online fundraiser dedicated to her psychiatric consultation.
Wiser friends have throttled me with the wisdom that a more progressive public outcome will likely derive from the unravelling of her self-peeled onion -- although it stinks and burns the eyes. But, like Sara Palin, it's sometime better to just let the loose cannon keep firing.
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 30 2009 @ 11:01AMI can't believe that you smart people of Minn, Have put a person like this into office. I realize that she is serving with other dumb people, but jesus get her out of there....
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 30 2009 @ 12:08PMI live in the 6th District and am extremely embarrassed by Michelle Bachmann's need to spout ignorant, "non-judgmental facts" that she's plucked from somewhere unknown.
What are the actual facts regarding how long each of those foster children (that she so "humbly" eludes to helping) actually stayed with her family.
Except for a few well written paragraphs, her credentials start around 2000...what is the truth regarding her actual law practice experience and social work?
The 6th District voters need to know the truth before the next election.
Republicans Bachman and Blackburn are definitely ditzy. And they do a real disservice to this country. Shame to the mainstream media that keeps putting them on, they are just as mean and stupid.
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 30 2009 @ 4:34PMEveryone that voted for this woman needs to get up walk to the closest mirror and slap the person they see in it.
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 30 2009 @ 5:49PMOh lighten up. I live in Mississippi and it's such a relief for some other state to get bad-mouthed. I do think the mainstream media ought to give it rest like they did for Mississippi--after about 40 years.
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 30 2009 @ 6:11PMI think it is an interesting coincidence that the first confirmed case of swine flu in MN (Cold Spring) just happens to be in Bachmann's 6th District.
Posted On: Friday, May. 1 2009 @ 12:00AMOnce again Bachmann doesn't let facts get in her way.
Posted On: Friday, May. 1 2009 @ 8:52AMI keep wondering if she is for real. Someone needs to muzzle the idiot. Was she reelected or can we get rid of her like yesterday.
Posted On: Sunday, May. 3 2009 @ 1:19PMShe was born in the state -Idiots Out Walking Around, what else can you expect??
P.S. Michele, smell my fingers... or pull them. Or something. The rhetoric you spew is ridiculous, childish, and disgusting and so I had to give it right back to you.
