Minn. reports first 'probable' swine flu case, first American death confirmed

Minnesota health officials have reported the first probable case of swine flu in the state. The report prompted two schools in Cold Spring to close today as a precaution.

The case is not confirmed because the standard lab tests available can't specifically detect the swine flu strain. Doctors have confirmed that it is a type A influenza. The patient will undergo further testing for confirmation.

And in other swine flu news, Americans can die for the outbreak too. The first U.S. death from swine flu has been confirmed in Texas. More on the Minnesota case from the Star Tribune:

Doug Schmitz, mayor of the town about 80 miles northwest of the Twin Cities said details on the case remain sketchy.

"From people I've talked to no one seems really alarmed, though that could change once we get details," Schmitz said. "At this point, everyone's staying calm."

As a result of the probable case, the Rocori Middle School and St. Boniface School in Cold Spring have been voluntarily closed for the day by local officials.

President Obama confirmed the first American death from swine flu on Wednesday. The victim was a 23-month-old child in Texas, says the New York Times.
