We're hoping this gay storm is bigger than any other. Take them by surprise, gay couples! We hope gay couples bombard the state with their same-sex love so the opposition can be officially shocked and awed when the world doesn't end due to these new marriage certificates.
Get over it folks: Their marriage will probably last longer and be much more meaningful than your heterosexual misery.
More from the Star Tribune:
Same-sex marriage advocates will be monitoring about 25 percent of Iowa's county recorder offices today to help couples navigate the process on the first day they can legally request a marriage license.Minnesota Public Radio also has a report about state residents heading across the border to get legally married. They have found dozens of couples who now have spring weddings planned that include a road trip to Iowa.
State and national advocates said they don't expect trouble at county recorder offices, thanks in part to a command by Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller for all recorders to accept marriage license applications from same-sex couples. Miller warned that his office would take legal action if recorders refuse to comply.
"We don't walk in there with the idea that our elected officials are going to do anything but obey the law," said Carolyn Jenison, executive director of One Iowa, the state's largest GLBT rights organization.
