Miami Herald editor, former Star Tribune editor to head Pulitzer board

Prior to his job at the Star Tribune, Gyllenhaal was a reporter and editor at the Miami Herald and executive editor of The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C. He took the Strib job in 2002 and returned to Miami in 2007.
The Herald has won two Pulitzer Prizes during his tenure. He has been a member of the Pulitzer board since 2001. He replaces Richard Oppel, former editor of the Austin American-Statesman.
The board makes final decisions on the annual awards given out by Columbia University.
