U of Minn. might cut 1,200 jobs

University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks is planning to propose the school cut 1,200 jobs to help make up for the loss in state funding.

The board of regents meet today to go over a number of issues, including budget cuts. The U must figure out how to manage a $177 million cut in state funding in the next two years. The cuts would include 200 faculty positions, hopefully through attrition.

The U might also increase tuition as much as 3 percent, which is still considered a minor increase due to the circumstances.

The final Board of Regents vote on the budget will come June 24.
