Momentum is gathering around a bid by Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty to become the Republican nominee to face Obama in the 2012 presidential election.

The New York Times (blog, but still) called him "increasingly visible" as a presidential candidate, and linked to this flattering profile by Politico.

At a party conference otherwise devoted to discussing internal business , the governor's speech is already drawing some buzz among GOP officials.

"Based on my conversations, there is a lot of excitement among RNC members at the prospect of hearing from Gov. Pawlenty at our summer meeting," said Matt Strawn, chairman of the Iowa Republican Party.

In addition to his speech, Pawlenty is likely to hold private meetings in San Diego.
