One Nation News responds to plagiarism accusations

Yesterday morning I posted a blog about One Nation News, an online website, print publication, and email blast that has been taking material from various newspapers around town, including City Pages' A List, and slapping a different byline on it. After leaving several messages at their office's number, editor in chief Kevin Hoffman managed to reach Jae Bryson, editor of One Nation News. Here's what he had to say.

According to Bryson, they have one staff writer who is "kind of overworked" as he is expected to write four or five articles a day, though rewrites of articles is also allowed, which presumably makes the workload more reasonable.

So, what does he mean by rewrites? According to him, workhorse Joe Johnson rewrites articles taken from the Star Tribune, City Pages, NPR, and the New York Times, to name only a few.

Tell me about it.

Joe Johnson obviously reads up on news and entertainment from a lot of different sources. Here's one of many examples. Check out what both he and Rachael Weiner had to say about Sarah Palin. They both state:

"Even Fox News has started to turn on Sarah Palin. In the midst of a segment about the Alaska Governor's battle against "liberal" attacks, Liz Trotta went off-message. Frankly, "the woman is inarticulate, undereducated," Trotta said, arguing that for once liberal criticism was "well-deserved.""

So what gives, Joe?

"He's kind of a last guy standing," states Bryson. "He's a young kid who wants to be a journalist but he's not sure he wants to do that anymore."

Joe sounds like a guy going through an existential crisis. Or perhaps he is fighting on a literal battleground, becoming the "final girl" in a horror flick, chased by the demons of journalism. My advice? Walk away while you still can Joe. One day you're hitting Ctrl+C then Ctrl+V into blog software, the next someone's making an unflattering movie about you called Shattered Glass and you're being played by Darth Vader.

But seriously guys, this isn't cool.

Jae Bryson called back a few minutes later after checking up on the situation.

"I've just spoken with someone who says that summer's been kind of a hard time and they have been doing that, so our process sucked over the summer. I apologize. I was like, 'This isn't happening, right?' And apparently it did happen."

It has indeed been a cruel summer for many of us, I agree. Bryson went on to explain that a young man named Garrett is actually responsible for the misunderstanding. But now that we've come this far, what happens now?

"I think we're going to have to let Garrett go. I've been doing this for a while so I know what's cool and what's not, but the process is that I should have said 'Hey, this is something you have to be very aware of. If there's no name on it, check with me or check with someone.'"

Indeed.

I was about to include more links, but it appears that One Nation News is chopping apart their site as we speak. It appears that journalism has struck again, leaving a trail of new adjectives and empty spaces behind.

Hopefully, this will be the end of their summer of cut and paste. These have been heady days, ONN, but like all shortcuts, they can't last forever. Good luck.
