• I have had a pet cat since I was a small child, so I have always appreciated them. In most areas there are no "leash laws" for cats. It is very easy to get close to animal when you are introverted and shy. It is not surprising but very sad to think that a young man thought it was appropriate that he be allowed to kill a little girl's pet because it was hunting on his property. I do not feel the bird's lives were worth the pain and heartache he caused to a child who loved her pet. I used to let my cat into my backyard because our dog used a pet door and I did not want to prevent her from going when she felt like it. Try keeping a cat from using a pet door. At any rate, when we moved, cats I have had over a decade, who are too old to hunt were picked off, one by one by some crazy in the neighborhood who disliked cats. My heart was broken and my depression has been very intense. Never knowing what happened to part of the family, or why is very cruel.I will never allow my current kitten to go outdoors, and in the event she escapes, I have a gps tracking device under her skin, and if I catch the piece of shit who is doing this I will beat the living crap out of them. So, just because you don't understand how much something means to someone else, does not give you an excuse or right to end a life. In many areas such as Hawi'i, Darwin Islands, and Gaum they are killing off native species. From personal experience I have had to clean up at least one kill a year (bird, squirrel, or rabbit) from my back door. Picking up the bits and pieces of a day old animal is no fun. • Where I live the gardens are protected with electric fences strong enough to light up a deer. You should see what it does to a cat. I've watched my own cat try to follow me into my own garden - he ran away faster than I've ever seen and he was in a daze for a good while after that (he was fine, but he learned to not go near it). Seems to me if the guy lived where he could have a garden and a bow and arrow, he could have more than just a cat causing issues and a fence might have been a better investment, even if it is just a flower garden. If he's got a garden because he likes to observe or "be one with" nature, well tough shit dude - thats nature. My other favorite option is a paint ball gun. The animal learns that it hurts and the owners get irate that they have to continuously wash paint out of fur. With the way I grew up, if someone messes with your animal or other property then you mess with them to make it even. I would unleash hundreds of ground moles into his garden so he'd wish he had let the cat live, and I'd take a 12 gauge to his birdhouses for spite. There is no need to bring the law into this yet. Jail time comes later if the argument continues.

I have had bob cats, coyotes, raccoons, deer and more as well. Some are predators killing each other which saddens me but is the way of things. I have talked nicely too many times to remember to try to have neighbors control their pet's activities virtually without exception to no avail, and often met with insensitivity and downright antagonistic response. SO, I HAVE LEARNED FROM EXPERIENCE THAT THE ONLY WAY TO DEAL WITH THESE JERKS IS TO HUMANELY TRAP THE LOOSE ANIMAL, TRANSPORT IT TO A DISTANT CITY AND RELEASE IT MINUS ANY IDENTIFICATION FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO ADOPT OR FOR ANIMAL CONTROL TO DEAL WITH AS THEY SEE FIT. • For two years I had words with a neighbor whose cat was constantly in my yard. It crapped in my planters, left decapitated animals on my deck, sidewalk and in the yard, and it loved to piss on my patio window for some reason (marking territory I suppose). In the middle of the night it would hook up with its friends and get into fights and howl and screech. I never shot the thing, but there were times when I really wanted to. Every single day it was in my yard. All the owner and her teenage kids had to sheepishly say was "It's so hard to keep it in the house". Apparently, their intellect was no match for a cat's. The thing finally died on its own I guess. I hope the simpletons don't get another one. I have two cats btw and if I bring them out, I watch them and bring them in with me. There are plenty of people out there who will assume your cat is just a feral stray if it's on their property. I've know people in more rural areas who trap them and drown them, not out of any particular malice, but just to keep them from breeding and creating a nuisance. Like it or not, some people view cats as little more than rodents/vermin. Anyway, I sympathize with the little girl, but her parents failed and should have had the animal under control.

• It is wrong to kill someone's pet for being a pest, but in this case jail time and 4 years probation is insane! My daughters have pet rats. Believe it or not, they are actually very cool pets...affectionate, smart, and love people. They are probably better pets than the CATS we have had. My kids would be absolutely devastated if someone killed them. Suppose they got loose and got in to our neighbors house. They are white rats, so they are obviously not wild. Should I blame my neighbor if he kills them? Should he go to jail for it?

• I think that the leash law should apply to all domestic animals and be strictly enforced to cut down the this type of situation. This a-hole had the opportunity to trap the cat and take it to the humane society rather than kill it and he chose to not do that. At least if it went missing and the little girl went looking for it, he could have told them that it trapped it and took it there and to keep it out of his yard or he would do it again. There were better, non-violent ways to handled this situation and he chose not to. If he suspected it was feral, again, he could have trapped it. How did anyone know he shot it anyway? • i don't think shooting anything to solve a problem is the right, or best answer. i have a kid that cuts through my yard and steps on my flowers, so i guess i should just shoot him down too right? anyway there are more tasteful and sophisticated ways that this could have been handled. setting up a trap with some cat food in it, once the cat was caught he could have just brought it to the shelter. if the owners of the pet cared loved it they would have come looking for it at the shelter. even shouting at the cat or spraying it with water would have been a better option than just killing it...
