Man throws pit bull, injuries to pup force vet to euthanize

• This is a very sick individual. My God, what is it with these people abusing animals like they are? How do the treat there humans if they kill their pets? I am still furious with M. Vick and I believe he didn't spend enough time incarcerated to help him wipe his sins out. I could just go on here, but I am going to say, I hope I see this man put away for a long, long time!!

The dog was put to sleep by the vet after I assume it was determined that saving the dog would be too costly. • He obviously threw the dog too hard. I smack my pup on the nose every time it nips at me. It is a pup and needs to be trained. I have also thrown my pup to the ground, flipped it over, and restrained it in a very harsh manner after nipping my 18 month old son. MY PUP NO LONGER BITES, it has learned it's place in my house and is a better, happier dog for it. We on't know all the details in this story. The dog could very well have deserved it. Any dog that bites me or my family will be getting 000 Buckshot for breakfast!

• Ben, I own two pitbulls and they are more than "cognizant of its (their) own existence". They are smarter than a lot of people I know but lack verbal communication skills. They are curious, have a sense of fairness and are extremely quick learning. I don't know a lot of goldfish but I've never known one to learn a series of tricks.

• When I was a kid someone dumped a pregnant dog and it came close to our house but she would'nt come to us, about a week later the pups were born,the mother trying to care for them killed a chicken and for that my dad cornered her, grabbed her by the tail,picked her up over his head and slammed on the ground more than once and he was abusive to us until we were big enough to defend ourselves,I'm 53 years old and I remember it like it was yesterday, I pray that he doesn't have kids or a wife, he's taken care of the dog.

• While a perfectly reasonable gut reaction would be the "neck snapping" route, I think that falls apart as a logically valid course of action. Two wrongs never constitute a right. If life is of value, which is why we'd be punishing him, then depriving him of life would just be a repetition of the same deprivation, regardless of what provoked it. That said, I don't think a fine is a stern enough response, and it does nothing to prevent this from happening again. As someone has mentioned above, if you want an ideal legal recourse, it would be a restraining order of sorts, preventing the man from owning or taking care of pets in the future. Perhaps a program similar to the required registration of sex offenders could act as a means of public shaming. The point is to (1) prevent him from hurting animals in the future and (2) send a strong message to the public that behavior of this sort is unacceptable. Killing him is undue excess in accomplishing the above, and is also a moral offense in itself, so the point is not to hurt him. I can't rule out moderate jail time also being a reasonable recourse in addition to the above.

• I would agree with bigbird. I wish they made restraining orders that forbid people with these offenses from owning animals. But you are probably right, Michael Vick is already back in the NFL after running an entire dogfighting ring.
