Based on a successful program out of Portland, Oregon, Free Geek Twin Cities is set to open its doors mid-October. But first, the nonprofit hopes to raise funds at a nerd-friendly benefit party this weekend at Grumpy's Bar in downtown Minneapolis. Learn more about this cool organization and what they're up to here in Minnesota after the jump.

Does the thought of opening up a computer case and being able to identify things like RAM, the motherboard, and the hard drive boggle your mind? With a little training it won't.

This is where Free Geek Twin Cities comes in. Not only will they be accepting any old computers you might have collecting dust in your home or garage, but they will also be teaching volunteers how to take apart and sort various hardware parts, then rebuild pcs while using open source software.

Hopefully, this process will help demystify computers while empowering people interested in technology. Also cool? After a volunteer donates 20 hours (or building five working computers), they get to take one home for free.

In preparation for the program starting up in October, Free Geek will be holding a nerd-tastic fundraiser 7 p.m. this Saturday, September 26 at Grumpy's Bar (1111 Washington Ave S., Minneapolis). Dubbed a "Geekathlon," for $5 you can compete in an epic quiz bowl guaranteed to test your scope of knowledge (and possibly win prizes).
