Fear not, Little Stacy, Target's toy aisles are safe once again -- but it's going to cost the big-box behemoth $600,000 in what will be the 39th civil penalty handed down by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission this year.
According to the commission, "Target knowingly imported and sold various toys (Kool Toyz ProductsAnima - Bamboo Collection GamesHappy Giddy Gardening Tools and Sunny Patch Chairs) with paint or other surface coatings that contained lead levels above legal limits."

Target agreed to pay it (what's a cool $600K to the retail giant?) but defended its "rigorous, multi-stage testing," claiming they found the toys to be kosher for future gardening prodigies. In 2007, the retail behemoth recalled nearly 350,000 of the various units sold between May 2006 and August 2007 and has not received any reports of injury.

Lead paint has been federally banned in the U.S. since 1978, and the CPSC's total civil penalties-involving mostly lead paint issues- this year now amounts to $9.8 million.
