Al Garcia back in court on meth distribution charges

Former Minneapolis City Hall power-broker Al Garcia was in federal court Tuesday on charges that he distributed meth for six years.

Garcia was a familiar face at City Hall in the 1980s and 1990s, helped get former councilmembers Joe Biernat, Steve Minn, Lisa McDonald, and Jackie Cherryhomes elected. Now Garcia, an attorney, has been disgraced and disbarred, accused--in two separate cases--of distributing methamphetamine and forcing a potential client to have sex with him.

On Tuesday, Garcia appeared in federal court and pled not guilty to the meth distribution charges. He is free on a $25,000 bail. The former lobbyist has somehow convinced the judge that he can't afford an attorney--a federal a public defender has been assigned to take his case.
