When is a baby stroller a weapon? When it cuts off your kid's fingertip. And it turns out that a series of strollers manufactured by Maclaren USA and sold by major retailers including Minneapolis-based Target have been doing just that.

It seems the strollers are perfectly safe when they're folded up, or unfolded and being used. But they can turn into little guillotines when a parent or caregiver folds or unfolds them and a child's finger gets caught in the stroller's hinge mechanism.

Twelve children's fingertips have been cut off in that manner, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and it's working with Maclaren on a voluntary recall of the strollers.

CPSC says the Maclaren strollers are sold at Minnesota-based Target, Babies 'R' Us and elsewhere for as much as $360, and include models such as Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller. About 1 million such strollers have been made and sold.
