The Humane Society says it's pleased that a man accused of leaving two Labrador retrievers to starve to death in a kennel behind a shed in Lyle has been found guilty on two felony counts.

Police say Jacob Joshua McAlister, 31, abandoned the dogs over the winter, and that by time the carcasses were discovered in April, they were covered in dog excrement.

More from the Austin Daily Herald:

The vet determined the dogs died of starvation, dehydration and exposure to the elements sustained from Jan. 1 through March 31. The chocolate lab -- which appeared to have been partially eaten by the black dog -- weighed 42.5 pounds. The black lab weighed 33.1 pounds.
McAlister will be sentenced in April.

The Humane Society's Barry Rush told the newspaper, "The fact that the county attorney held firm with two felony counts is encouraging."
