Aaron Biber, the prominent Minneapolis attorney accused of raping a teenage boy, had his bail set at $500,000 on Tuesday afternoon and was ordered to surrender his passport by Hennepin County District Court Judge Karen Janisch. He was also ordered to stay at least a mile away from the alleged victim's house and have no contact with any minors except his own two children.

According to the criminal complaint, Biber gave his alleged victim alcohol, sent him graphic texts and pictures of his own genitals, and engaged in unprotected anal and oral sex with him in October. After suffering injuries from one encounter, the boy contacted an unnamed person, who contacted South Lake Minnetonka Police. The complaint says police began monitoring Biber's communications with the boy, and arrested him at the Eden Prairie Mall, where he had arranged to meet with the boy. He was charged Monday with first-degree criminal sexual conduct and solicitation of a child to engage in sexual activity.

The criminal complaint against Biber says, in part:

During the taped phone call, the defendant graphically described how much he enjoyed anally penetrating Child A and how much he enjoyed having Child A's penis penetrating his anus. He described a two-hour session of anal and oral sex without benefit of lubrication or condoms. Referring to the October 2009 abuse, the Defendant stated that he was aware Child A was "inebriated" and that Child A "was doing everything [he] could to stay awake and hard.

Hennepin County attorneys had sought a higher bail for Biber, who was dressed in an orange Hennepin County Jail jumpsuit for his hearing. The Star Tribune reported that his defense attorney, Rachael Goldberger countered that her client had lived "lived an exemplary life for 46 years."

Biber specialized in business law with the Minneapolis firm of Gray, Plant, Mooty, and he was treasurer of the Minnesota Bar Association. The firm said that he has been placed on leave, and the bar association said Biber is being suspended from his position. Colleagues at both organizations expressed dismay at the turn of events.
