Righty fans cry foul over Bachmann-as-welfare queen data

Our favorite big time conservative blog, National Review's The Corner, was among those pitching right in leaping to the defense of Rep. Michelle Bachmann in the wake of headlines yesterday calling her a family-farm welfare queen. She has spent years railing against socialism and government handouts, but it turns out her family farm in Wisconsin helped itself to about a quarter-million dollars in federal crop subsidies.

No fair, cries Stephen Spruiell: "Bachmann voted against the 2008 reauthorization of the farm bill, and then voted against it again when the House voted to override President Bush's veto." Which is true, of course. And he kindly offers links to the Clerk of the House Web site for both votes as proof. To which it's hard to resist paraphrasing a favorite GOP campaign attack: She was for the crop subsidies before she was against them. Meanwhile, her very-red district loves her anyway.
