A University of Minnesota freshman was shot in the abdomen on Monday outside Centennial Hall in what campus police are describing as one of a series of three crimes in the area at about 11 p.m.

Freshman Nick Furey told The Minnesota Daily he was with the victim just before the shooting. He said he heard what sounded like fireworks, and waiting for the elevator in the Centennial hall lobby, when the victim approached him.

"The kid walks up to me probably 20 seconds after I heard the gunshots and he looks at me with this blank face," Furey said. "He pulls up his shirt and he goes 'I think I got shot' and he's just spewing blood from his stomach."

The victim was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. His condition is unknown. No arrests have been made.
