Too many drunks in St. Cloud, or not enough beds?

The St. Cloud Times takes a look this morning at one of the unintended consequences of the closure of state hospitals in the 1980s: No empty detox beds at the Central Minnesota Mental Health Center for about a quarter of the days each month. The center serves Stearns, Benton, Sherburne and Wright counties.

The center is being renovated, and gaining three detox beds in the process. And a special facility for chronic inebriates is due to open later in the year in St. Cloud. That's good news, the director of St. Cloud Hospital's emergency trauma center told the paper, because it will ease pressure on his ER.
