Andy Mannix, Village Voice Media Fellow, takes 2nd place in Hearst awards for U wrestling probe
Andy Mannix, the Village Voice Media Fellow working at City Pages, has taken second place in the 50th annual William Randolph Hearst Foundation's Journalism Awards Program for his investigation into alleged sweetheart real estate deals inside the University of Minnesota's wrestling program.
The competition, for best in-depth reporting, attracted entries from 89 students at 55 universities across the the country. Judges included Jeff Cohen, executive vice president and editor of the Houston Chronicle; Peter Bhatia, editor of The Oregonian; and Jennifer Sizemore, the vice president and editor in chief at MSNBC.com and executive producer of NBC News.
Mannix, who recently graduated from the U's journalism program, reported his original findings for the Minnesota Daily in December. His work prompted an investigation by the university.
