Minneapolis police are trying to figure out why 16-year-old Montrell Wade, a star running back on the Washburn High School football team, was shot in the face while hanging out with friends at his uncle's apartment on Bloomington Avenue and 32nd Street on Saturday afternoon.

"Somebody had a gun up there and I guess they were throwing it back and forth like they was in the wild, wild west, from hand to hand, and then I guess they threw it and it went off," a witness told WCCO-TV.

Andrew Moore, who described himself as a family friend to KARE-TV told the station that his own son, Wade and a couple of other teens were at the home to help with a home improvement project. He was out getting supplies and returned to find the boy shot.

"They're good kids so I just assumed they were going to be all right because there have never been any gun problems over here before with any of them," Moore told the station.

The Strib reported Wade was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he's being treated.
