A Minnesota grand jury indicted Ryan Stanley Hurd Friday on first- and second-degree murder charges.

Hurd, 21, is accused of stabbing his girlfriend, 19-year-old Kathryn Rose Anderson of Eagan, Minn., more than a 100 times and leaving her in a ditch last December. Her partially clad body was found near Owatonna.

After the attack, investigators believe Hurd tossed his knife in the Mississippi River and fled by bus to his hometown of Tulsa, Okla. They found his car soaked in blood outside of the bus depot, tracked Hurd down, and brought him back to Minnesota.

If convicted, he faces a life sentence for the first-degree murder charges and up to 40 years for the second-degree charges.

Anderson was an aspiring pastry chef from Eagan. Hurd was arrested on domestic assault charges last October after an argument with Anderson grew physical. A Dakota County judge had ordered Hurd to stay away from the woman.
