Timothy J. Krolick stole mail from sick kids at Ronald McDonald House

Timothy J. Krolick, a former U.S. Postal Service mail carrier, is going to prison for eight months and has been ordered to pay restitution after being convicted of stealing mail addressed to residents of the Ronald McDonald House near the University of Minnesota campus.

Krolick was employed the postal service from 2004 to 2009, mostly working in the USPS station near the University of Minnesota; students were also among those from whom he stole mail, according to court documents. He was arrested and indicted last June.

While Krolick admitted to a single count of mail theft, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office said he has admitted to stealing mail for at least 18 months and from at least 250 victims. While the Ronald McDonald House was named a victim in the case, the mail Krolick stole from there was actually meant for people who were living there temporarily while their children were receiving medical treatment.

"The victims include tenants from the Ronald McDonald House, and then other victims included residential postal customers in that area, many of which were students at the University [of Minnesota]," Cooney said. She said the Ronald McDonald House was the only victim to step forward in the case.
