Tony Benshoof, Minnesota luger, places 8th in Vancouver and hangs up his sled

Thirty-four year old Tony Benshoof, of White Bear Lake, placed 8th in the men's luge event over the weekend at the Vancouver winter Olympics, left the track and announced his retirement from the sport after the national championships -- and back surgery.

Benshoof, who was racing in his third Olympics, told the Pioneer Press that officials shortened the track after the training-run death of Nodar Kumaritashvili, and that the abbreviated run didn't suit his strengths.
