Minnesota legislators make it Canada Day at the Capitol: Weird timing, eh?

Hours after the U.S. Olympics Men's Ice Hockey fell to Canada in an overtime nail-biter, Minnesota lawmakers today will vote on a resolution recognizing March 1 as "Canada Day at the Capitol." The designation is intended to celebrate Minnesota's economic and cultural ties with the Great White North. (And what better way to do than with an empty moniker attached to an arbitrary day?)

Before you accuse state legislators of siding with the enemy, note the timing is coincidental. From the Strib.

"We are tickled" that "Canada Day" is coming on the heels of the Olympics, but it is nothing more than a coincidence, said consul spokeswoman Amy McBeth.

"It was more a function of timing for the legislature," McBeth said. "They have a lot of things that they are doing.
