Eric Magnuson announces resignation as Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice
Eric Magnuson is calling it quits. Citing personal and family matters, he notified Gov. Tim Pawlenty today of his decision to step down June 30 after two years as chief justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court.
Pawlenty appointed Magnuson to his perch in March 2008. With his resignation, Magnuson gives the lame duck Republican governor an opportunity to name a successor to an increasingly right-tilted court before his term is over at the end of the year.
Magnuson was part of the three-member State Canvassing Board that in January 2009 certified Al Franken's Senate recount victory over Norm Coleman. Coleman challenged the results all the way to the state Supreme Court, which rejected his appeal in June. He's going to be speaking about that race on April 14 at the William Mitchell Public Square Lecture Series.
