Isaiah Vinson, age 17, struck and killed by St. Paul city truck

Categories: How We Live

The Central High School student was killed yesterday when he was struck by a St. Paul city maintenance truck. Police released his name today and are saying he was likely pushed into the roadway as a result of horseplay.

St. Paul Police say that Isaiah Vinson was standing at the northwest corner of Lexington and Selby with some friends, waiting for the light to change so they could cross Lexington Avenue. Witnesses said that Vinson and his buddies were pushing and shoving in "horse play." At some point, Isaiah was pushed into the roadway and struck the southbound vehicle.

Police responded to the call at about 2:10 p.m. and found Vinson in the roadway with serious injuries. He died later that afternoon at Regions Hospital.

Douglas John Bergstrom, 52, was driving the St. Paul Parks and Recreation maintenance truck that struck Vinson. Police say it appears that Bergstrom was not at fault--he was not been speeding, drinking, or driving inattentively.

Police are still conducting their investigation, and are asking anyone with information to call 651.266.5722.
