U of M grad students protest fees

Categories: U of M

Graduate students at the University of Minnesota are protesting the student fees they pay, arguing that they are underpaid workers.

"We want to remind people that we're not just graduate students, we're workers. We are teachers," said Melody Hoffmann, a graduate student in communication studies who helped organize the protest. A crowd of about 60 had gathered at the protest.

The students are charged up to $1,100, which they say should be eliminated. The students staged a similar protest last year but nothing changed. This year, they are asking that the university knock off $200 of the fees, taking them from the pay of college administrators.

Earlier this month U of M president Robert Bruininks announced a 1.15 percent faculty salary cut for the coming year.
