Kurt Kruize, Army reservist, dies in freak Iraq accident

Kurt Kruize, the Army reservist from St. Cloud who died recently in Iraq, leaves behind four children, the youngest 2 years old, the oldest 13.

Now the soldier's father, Lyle Kruize, tells the St. Cloud Times that Kruize died in a freak accident, and was crushed between a trailer and a tractor. Few details have been reported about the accident, other than that it occurred in Baghdad, according to the St. Cloud paper.

Billie Jo Kruize told Minnesota Public Radio that her husband started his military career when he turned 18. At the time of the interview , she didn't know exactly how he had died. Kruize is the 90th person with Minnesota ties to die in the ongoing wars, according to MPR. This morning Minnesota Public Radio broadcast is well worth listening to. Here's how Billie Jo Kruize described her late husband:

"He is a hero, he is a true hero to everybody, but he's a true hero to me in my heart," she said. "He will be truly missed and he will be in my heart forever because he's the love of my life and I do miss him."

According to iCasualties, There have ben 20 U.S. military deaths in Iraq so far this year. Last year that number was 149. The most deadly year for U.S. troops was 2007, when 904 died. Since the war started in 2003, 4,390 American service men and women have lost their lives.
