A St. Paul library employee was arrested in her home yesterday on suspicion of systematically stealing materials from the library. A search of the suspect's house found more than 1,400 stolen items from the library, including books, periodicals and video and audio materials, according to St. Paul police.

The investigation began in early April when employees of the St. Paul Public Library caught onto a suspicious pattern of "irregularities" in unreturned books, according to police.

The library's managers reported their suspicions to the St. Paul police, who followed a trail of phony library cards, unauthorized fee waiving and improper inventory coding to a 12-year employee of the library system.

Police plan to tally up the total value of the stolen items before filing charges.
